Applying Eye Makeup

by Marcia Connors

Many women are overwhelmed when it comes to applying eye makeup. It’s not really that difficult once you get in a little practice. First, apply a thin layer of foundation or primer on the eyelids to correct imperfections and create the base for your application of color.

Set your eyelids with powder if you'll be using powder eye shadow. If you'll be using cremes or pencils, they will glide more easily over a foundation alone without a powder.

Next, choose your colors. To identify colors that work for you, you can actually use your hair as a guide.

Blondes look good in creams and taupes. Brunettes are often more flattered by mochas and chocolate browns. If you are auburn or redhead, try coppers, peaches, and reddish browns or cool tones like pink and lavenders. Gray hair is gorgeous with grays, soft purples, and soft blues.

Next choose your style. The simplest technique is one shadow all over dusting the entire eyelid with a wash of one color. You can still add eyeliner and eyebrow pencil.

For more drama, emphasizing the crease line for depth. Beginning with the lightest color, dust a light tone over the entire eyelid. Then dust a medium shade in the creaseline. Extend the color slightly beyond the crease, up toward the browbone. This adds depth to the eyes.

When your eye color is complete use a large eye shadow brush and dust the entire eye area with loose powder to help set and blend. Add mascara and brow pencil, as needed.

You shouldn't be able to see where any of the colors begin or end.

These simple eye makeup application tips will help you look your best!
